Known
as the
"Heavenly Lake", Namtso is the largest
saltwater lake in Tibet. Found in an elevation of some
4,590 meters above sea level, it is situated at the edge
of the barren and wind-swept Chang Thang Plateau
noth of Lhasa. The trek leads across the Nyanchen
Thang-la Mountains to the pebbled shores of Lake
Namtso,
inhabited by large flocks of birds, both
resident and migratory,
to
the
mystical environs of Tashi-Dor.
En
route back to Lhasa we visit the Reting
Monastery, the seat of the Reting Rinpoche, then the
Dregung
Monastery, constructed on a sheer cliff-face and
offering a magnificent sweeping view of the valley
below. Next day it's on to the stunning
Ganden monastery
site, then back to Lhasa. But the tour does not end
there, from Lhasa we continue to Shigatse, visit
Tashilhumpo Monastery, then go on to Gyangtse and
the Palkhor Monastery. Finally, driving past the Lake
Yamdrok we return to the capital completing our
grand tour of the heart of Tibet.
