Trek Ganden to Samye,

 in the footsteps of Tibet's pilgrims

It takes 4 days to walk from  Ganden to Samye and the trek is one of the finest soft treks in Central Tibet. Ganden Monastery, a grand site and a starting point for the trek, is 60km east of Lhasa. It was first built in 1409, during the 7 year reign of Emperor Yong Le of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, at least 10 buildings have been now restored. Views from the mountain ridge above Ganden are superb, with barley fields sprawling across the valley floor, the splendid landscape doted with small villages. The trek concludes in Samye, the oldest Monastery of Red Hat sect. Upon ferrying across the Tsangpo, we make a side-trip to the nearby imposing Mindroling Monastery, the largest Nyingmapa-sect monastery in Central Tibet.

 

Ganden to Samye Tour Itinerary

 

Day 1 Fly to Lhasa; pick up and transfer to Hotel; rest/acclimatization; Hotel Shangbala, or Hotel Mandala or Hotel Snowland, or Hotel Pantoc, etc;

Day 2 Potala, Jokhang, Barkhor; Hotel.


Day 3 Tibet Museum, Drepung Monastery, Norbulinka; Hitel.

 

Day 4 Sera, Phabongkha temple, short hike; free afternoon in Lhasa; Hotel.

 

Day 5 Lhasa to Drakyera; short hike; then to Ganden Monastery; Camp;

 

Day 7 Trekking; camp.

 

Day 8 Trekking; camp.

 

Day 9 Trekking; arrive at Samye; Guest House.

 

Day 10 Visit Samye Monastery, cross Tsangpo; then drive to Tsedang, the birth place of Tibet Culture, with a stop at Mindroling Gompa; Hotel.

 

Day 11 Tradruk Temple, Yongbulakhang, Tombs of Tibetan Kings, Hotel.

 

Day 12 Tsedang to Lhasa, Hotel.

 

Day 13 Free day in Lhasa, shopping or similar.

 

Day 14 Transfer to airport for departure.
